How to Stack Colorado Heat Pump Rebates and Get the Most Money Back

Colorado homeowners can combine multiple incentive programs to dramatically reduce the cost of a heat pump install — but the stacking rules are specific. Here's exactly what stacks with what in 2026.

The 2026 Colorado Rebate Programs

⚡ Xcel Energy Cold Climate Rebate

$2,250/ton

~$6,750 for a typical 3-ton system. Requires active Xcel gas service, converting from gas to electric, no gas backup heat. Application deadline: install by Dec 31, 2026.

🏔️ Colorado HEAR Program

Up to $8,000

Income-qualified only (≤150% area median income). Up to $8,000 for households ≤80% AMI; up to 50% of costs for 80–150% AMI. Administered by Colorado Energy Office. Cannot stack with Power Ahead Colorado.

🌱 Power Ahead Colorado

$1,500 flat

No income requirement. Flat $1,500 rebate for ENERGY STAR cold-climate certified heat pumps. Launching April 2026. Cannot stack with HEAR.

🏛️ Colorado State Heat Pump Tax Credit

$1,000

No income requirement. Passed as an upfront discount by your registered contractor (they claim the credit and reduce your bill). Stacks with everything.

The Stacking Rules

Critical rule: HEAR and Power Ahead Colorado cannot be stacked — both are federally funded. You must choose one. For income-qualified households, HEAR is almost always higher. For everyone else, use Power Ahead Colorado.

Stack A — For Xcel customers over income limits

Xcel rebate ($6,750) + Colorado state credit ($1,000) + Power Ahead CO ($1,500) = $9,250

Stack B — For income-qualified Xcel customers

Xcel rebate ($6,750) + Colorado state credit ($1,000) + HEAR ($4,000–$8,000) = $11,750–$15,750

How to Actually Claim These Rebates

Xcel rebate: Your installer handles the application. Only Xcel-registered contractors can submit. Confirm your installer is registered before signing anything.

Colorado HEAR: Applied at point of sale by a registered contractor. The rebate comes off your invoice — you don't wait for a check. Contractors register at the Colorado Energy Office.

Power Ahead Colorado: Administered through DRCOG. Starting April 2026. Application process TBD — your installer should be familiar with it by the time the program launches.

State tax credit: Your contractor applies for it and passes at least one-third of the value as an upfront discount. Ask your installer to confirm they are registered for the Colorado Heat Pump Tax Credit program.
